Dale 1929b
Dale, Maud. Modigliani. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1929. Monograph.
When Modigliani by Maud Dale (1875–1953) was released in October 1929 as part of Alfred A. Knopf's series on Modern Art, it became the first monograph on the artist to be published in the United States and is considered to be the first "serious analysis" of his work.1 At that time, Maud and her husband Chester Dale (1883–1962), who began buying Modigliani's paintings in 1927, owned almost one third of the approximately forty works that were reproduced in the book.
