Ceroni 1970

Ceroni, Ambrogio. I dipinti di Modigliani. Milan: Rizzoli Editore, 1970. Monograph.

Published in May 1970, this was the third and final catalogue published by the Italian scholar and Modigliani expert Ambrogio Ceroni (1907–1970). Although the relatively slim volume is widely accepted as the authoritative reference on the artist’s work—recognizing 337 paintings—it was never intended to be a catalogue raisonné. In fact, it was part of Classici dell'Arte, a series by Rizzoli illustrated with black-and-white thumbnail images that offered an overview of an artist’s works at an affordable price. At the time, Ceroni was an internationally recognized Modigliani scholar, having authored two extensively researched catalogues: Amedeo Modigliani: Peintre (1958) and Amedeo Modigliani: Dessins et Sculptures, avec suite du catalogue illustré des peintures (1965). Though the latter focused on drawings and sculptures, it supplemented the earlier publication with additional reproductions of paintings.1
