Barnes and de Mazia 1939

Barnes, Albert C. and Violette de Mazia. The Art of Cézanne. New York: Harcourt, Brace & Co. in association with The Barnes Foundation Press, Merion, PA, 1939.

Dr. Albert C. Barnes (1872–1951) used his collection as an educational tool and, in keeping with its mission, published several volumes dedicated to a single artist. The Art of Cézanne, a thorough examination of Paul Cézanne's work, was co-authored with Violette de Mazia (1896–1988), who had joined the Foundation soon after it opened and became the director of education upon Dr. Barnes's death in 1951.

Barnes and de Mazia discussed Cézanne's influence on other artists. About Modigliani, they wrote: "His debt to Cézanne is most obvious in the surface-quality and texture of his paint, the structural color of his masses, and the pattern of planes in those of his pictures done under the influence of Cubism." (p. 140)

At the end of this publication, a section titled "Catalogue Data" serves as a supplementary index with "Miscellaneous Works of Art," which listed related works, including three Modigliani paintings.
