Adolphe Basler (1876-1951), the Polish-born author settled in Paris in 1899. He met Modigliani in 1907, shortly after the artist arrived in Paris. Becoming an art critic and a marchande en chambre (a dealer without a gallery), Basler championed and sold the work of many of the School of Paris artists.
