Pfannstiel 1929

Pfannstiel, Arthur. Modigliani: catalogue présumé. Paris: Éditions Marcel Seheur, 1929. Monograph. Preface by Louis Latourrettes.

Titles occasionally differ between the catalogue and image captions. In the entries, the catalogue title appears first, followed by the caption title.

German-born painter-turned-translator Arthur Pfannstiel (1901–1984) published the first Modigliani catalogue raisonné, which was released in Paris in December 1929. Though the ambitious publication included over three hundred paintings, drawings, and sculptures, the works are unnumbered and fewer than one third are reproduced, making the catalog difficult for scholars to navigate. Nevertheless, it is an important record of the earliest owners of the works.
