Co-organized by the Cleveland Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art, New York, the first museum retrospective of Modigliani's work in the United States originated in Cleveland, where the artist's work was shown alongside examples by Chaim Soutine. The over-fifty paintings, seven sculptures, and forty-five drawings represented the largest showing of Modigliani's work in the country to date.
