1943–51 Philadelphia

Philadelphia Museum of Art, Paintings from the Chester Dale Collection, October 10, 1943–October 1951 (exhibition catalogue).

In 1943, New York art collectors Chester Dale (1883–1962) and Maud Murray Dale (1875–1953) sent a number of works from their substantial art collection to three museums. While the old masters went to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Art Institute of Chicago received twentieth-century works, including five Modigliani paintings, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art received nineteenth and twentieth-century works, including eleven Modigliani paintings. In Philadelphia, the works went on display in four galleries in October 1943 and remained at the museum until October 1951.
