1928a New York

Wildenstein Galleries, New York, Loan Exhibition of Modern French Art from the Chester Dale Collection: For the Benefit of the French Hospital of New York, October 1928 (exhibition catalogue).

The New York-based stock broker Chester Dale (1883–1962), who was advised by his wife Maud Murray Dale (1876–1953), began buying art in the mid-1920s. In a short period of time, they amassed a large collection, much of which was portraiture. This exhibition, a fund-raiser for the French Hospital of New York, was the first showing of their collection and featured fifty-one paintings. For over two decades, the Dales regularly loaned their artwork and did much to promote the artists whose work they collected.
