Group exhibition
1947 Chicago
Art Institute of Chicago, The Winterbotham Collection, May 23–June 22, 1947 (exhibition catalogue).
In 1921, Joseph Winterbotham (1852–1925), a Chicago-based collector of modern art, established a fund at the Art Institute of Chicago that was dedicated to acquiring "modern paintings by foreign artists."1 Though he died several years later, his son continued to support the Winterbotham Plan, which ultimately acquired thirty-five paintings—including works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, André Derain, and Modigliani, among others—for the museum.
