Billed as the museum's "first great comprehensive exhibition of contemporary portraiture," the show, which was organized by Monroe Wheeler (1899–1988), director of exhibitions, surveyed the genre from 1900 up to the present day and included three paintings by Modigliani.1 After closing in New York, it traveled to four venues across the United States.
